Good web design Durham NC owners can use has something in common with the city's best buildings. Durham did not tear down its tobacco factories and warehouses; it gutted the insides and put new businesses in them. Most small business websites need that kind of renovation more than a demolition: keep what is true about the company, throw out what no longer works, and build it around how customers search today.
Dominion Web Design Pro is Maurice Johnson, who writes every page by hand, builds a free demo before you pay, and charges one printed price.
From cigarette factories to offices, kitchens and startups
- 1904The Watts and Yuille warehouses go up on West Main Street to store tobacco, used first by American Tobacco and later by Liggett and Myers until 1970.
- 1981The two warehouses are renamed Brightleaf Square and turned into shops; today they hold retail and offices.
- 1987American Tobacco stops making cigarettes at its downtown plant, and the buildings sit empty for years.
- 2004After Capitol Broadcasting Company buys and restores the site, GlaxoSmithKline becomes the first business to move into the renovated American Tobacco Campus in June 2004.
- 2010American Underground opens in the campus basement as low-cost, month-to-month space for founders. In 2013 Google picked it as one of the first sites in its new tech hub network for entrepreneurs.
The result is a downtown where a software startup, a restaurant, a law office and an event space can share one old brick block. Their websites have very different jobs.
Website design Durham NC renters and their neighbors need

The companies inside converted buildings are only half the story. Around them is a ring of owner-run services: office cleaners, electricians who know old wiring, caterers who deliver to a meeting room, photographers who shoot product launches. Those are the businesses that tend to have the weakest sites and the most to gain.
An office cleaner who wants contracts downtown needs a page that says which buildings or areas it covers, whether it works nights, how it handles keys and alarms, and how to get a quote by tomorrow. That page does more than any slogan.
Durham website design in the shadow of Duke
Duke says its combined workforce is more than 48,000 people, which makes it the largest employer in Durham and the second-largest private employer in North Carolina. A university and health system that size shapes the small business map: home health and therapy practices, child care that opens early, pet sitters, meal prep, apartment cleaning, car repair that can be booked around a hospital shift.
Those owners win online by being specific about time. If you open at 6 a.m., say so at the top. If you take evening appointments for people coming off a shift, put it in the page title of your booking page. A Durham customer working odd hours searches at odd hours, often on a phone, and picks whoever answers the question first.
Parrish Street, Hayti and a long record of Black business
In 1906 the leaders of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company moved its headquarters to Parrish Street, and Mechanics and Farmers Bank followed in 1907. The four-block district became known nationally as Durham's "Black Wall Street." Just to the south, the Hayti community was the main residential district for Black Durham and the center of its schools, churches and cultural life, until 1960s urban renewal did heavy damage, especially to Hayti. The Hayti Heritage Center, in the former St. Joseph's AME church complex, keeps that history in public view.
That history is part of why many owners in Durham care who they hire. Dominion Web Design Pro is Black-owned, and there is more on that on our Black-owned web design page. It does not change the deal for anyone: free demo, hand-written pages, one-time price.
Two kinds of Durham site, side by side
A founder's site
- One sentence that says what you make and for whom
- A founder or team page with real names and roles
- A demo request, waitlist or contact form that reaches a person
- A press or updates page you will actually keep current
A neighborhood service site
- Phone number and tap-to-call at the top of every page
- A page for each service you really sell
- The parts of Durham and the nearby towns you cover
- Hours, photos of real work and a quote form
We write both kinds. The second kind is where most of the local search traffic is, and where a fresh site usually changes the phone the fastest.
Contractors who work on old buildings

A city full of hundred-year-old brick creates steady work for roofers, masons, electricians and HVAC crews. Property managers choosing one want to see that you have handled older structures: photos of past jobs, the kinds of buildings you work on, insurance and license details, and how quickly you show up when a roof leaks in a storm.

Write it as you would explain it on site. "We rewire older commercial spaces for new tenants" tells a building owner more than a list of buzzwords. Each service deserves its own page so Google can match it to the search that asks for it.
Web design for North Carolina buyers at RTP
Research Triangle Park covers about 7,000 acres, and roughly 78% of it lies in Durham County, according to the Research Triangle Foundation. Companies there buy catering, cleaning, signage installation, IT help and event services from small local vendors. A vendor site aimed at them should read like a short capabilities sheet: services, coverage, response time, and a named contact.
If you are starting or growing a company, the SBTDC runs 16 offices across North Carolina with free, confidential counseling, and its office at North Carolina Central University serves Durham County. American Underground still offers space and community for founders downtown.
Who builds it, and from where
Straight answer on location: Dominion Web Design Pro has no office in Durham. Maurice Johnson builds every site from Big Sandy in East Texas and delivers it remotely, by link, phone and email.
You see the demo by link, approve every page by email or phone, and own the finished site. Durham website design does not need a coffee meeting to be done well; it needs careful questions and honest copy.

We do not sell page counts. Every page on every plan is researched and written by hand for your business and your town. That is slower than generating a few hundred pages from a template, and it is the reason these pages get read. If the research says your service area needs thirty pages, you get thirty good ones rather than a hundred thin ones.
